One Health: At the crossroads of Human Health, Animal Health and the Ecosystems Health

Human health and animal health are interdependent and bound to the health of the ecosystems in which they exist. In the past three decades the majority of the novel, emergent infectious diseases are zoonotic and originate mainly from wildlife animals. The principal divers of this occurrence are associated with human activities, including changes in the ecosystems and land use, intensification of agriculture, urbanization, and international travel and trade. It is clear that an integrative approach where experts in different fields work together to tackle, in a comprehensive way, all the factors involved in the emergence of these novel diseases is needed. Putting it in a simple way, One Health is an approach that brings multiple sectors to work together to achieve an improved health for ourselves, our domestic and wild animals and our planet.

Dr. Leyva-Grado is Director of Pre-Clinical Immunology and Animal Models at AuroVaccines LLC, a Division of Aurobindo Pharma, USA.
