Who is eligible?
This program is open to DUNY undergrads whose major leaves room to complete the OT prerequisite courses alongside their degree requirements. Majors that typically qualify include:
- Health Sciences — Pre-OT track
- Health Sciences — General track
- Social Sciences with a Psychology emphasis
- Psychology
- Humanities (most concentrations)
Students in other majors may also be eligible. Your academic advisor or Dr. Sorrentino can confirm whether your major qualifies.
Social Sciences/Psychology students: An accelerated option is available that lets accepted students begin graduate OT coursework as early as the summer of junior year.
Two ways to apply
OPTION 1
Apply after freshman year
- 30+ credits completed at DUNY
- 3.0+ cumulative GPA
- 1 OT prerequisite completed (e.g. Intro to Sociology or A&P I)
- 10 hours community or university service
- Evidence of leadership (title or action — officer, mentor, tutor, coach, long-term volunteer, etc.)
- Personal statement
- 1 letter of recommendation from a DUNY professor
- Faculty interview
OPTION 2
Apply after sophomore year
- 60+ credits (30+ at DUNY)
- 3.0+ cumulative GPA
- Key prerequisites completed with a minimum 3.0 prerequisite GPA: Intro to Sociology, Abnormal Psychology (C or better each); Anatomy & Physiology I & II with lab (C or better each). Additional OT prerequisites are required for the full program — these are the ones most students complete by sophomore year.
- 10 hours service per year through sophomore year
- Evidence of leadership (title or action — officer, mentor, tutor, coach, long-term volunteer, etc.)
- Personal statement
- 1 letter of recommendation from a DUNY professor
- Faculty interview

Prepare your materials
Unofficial transcript, personal statement, one letter of rec from a DUNY professor, and documentation of service hours and leadership.
Submit your application by June 30
Submit after completing your freshman or sophomore year.
Interview with OT faculty
Eligible candidates will be invited to interview with program faculty.
Receive your decision
Decisions are issued by August 15, following your interview.
What’s expected once you’re in
Your guaranteed seat stays guaranteed as long as you continue to meet all program requirements, including:
- Maintain the required cumulative GPA and prerequisite GPA
- Earn the required minimum grade in each OT prerequisite course
- Complete all remaining OT prerequisites on schedule
- Stay on track for on-time graduation
- Continue to demonstrate service and leadership
- Meet with OT program faculty at least once per semester
- Actively participate in OT program events, such as research symposiums and Student Occupational Therapy Association (SOTA) events
