College Holds Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for Hennessy Expansion

Student athletes demonstrate to College Trustee Dr. Clement Osei how to use equipment in the new fitness center during a tour of the facility.

The latest campus addition – the Hennessy Center expansion – was showcased during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, October 19, 2017.

College President Sr. Mary Eileen O’Brien, O.P., Ph.D., reviewed the College history from its founding in 1952 and the need since then for recreational opportunities for residential students. “This expansion includes an additional gym, a well-equipped fitness center and creative practice and program space. How grateful we are to the many people who brought it to fruition,” she said.

Sr. Mary Eileen thanked the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board, Holt Construction, Dominican College’s Facilities Staff and the many donors. In addition, she thanked State Senator David Carlucci, who was in attendance, for his support.

Senator Carlucci cited a study that found students enrolled in a school fitness center had higher GPAs and were more likely to graduate. That is important, he said, because Dominican College graduates contribute so much to the community.  “The things that are going on here at Dominican College don’t just stay within these walls, they proliferate to our community and improve the quality of life of all of the people in our community and in New York State,” he said.

The dignitaries and donors at the ceremony toured the improvements and additions to the Hennessy Center, including the new gym, the fitness center, an athletic training lab, and a recruiting/conference room. The festivities included a ribbon-cutting outside both the gym and the fitness center.  Sr. Barbara McEneany, O.P., Director of Campus Ministry, blessed the area outside of the fitness center with Holy Water.  In addition, a plaque listing the project’s top donors was unveiled outside the new gym.

College Celebrates Culture and

Night in Ireland 072

Musicians from the Pearl River School of Irish Music performed at the Night in Ireland event.

Dominican College held its third annual Night of Culture and Cuisine on Friday, March 11, and this year a sell-out crowd was transported to Ireland. The attendees were treated to the sights and sounds of Ireland in the Lawrence Room in Rosary Hall from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The menu consisted of Irish favorites including scones, shepherd’s pie, Guinness stew, Irish smoked salmon and corned beef. For dessert, there was pavlova, trifle, and more. Of course, there was plenty of Guinness to drink, and Irish coffee to end the night.

While dining on delicious food, guests were treated to local Irish entertainment. Dancers from the Broesler School of Irish Dance delighted the crowd with their footwork.  In addition, musicians from the Pearl River School of Irish Music played traditional Irish instruments and performed a few songs.

Denise Mingione, was among those who attended. “Not only was the food fabulous, but the live Irish music, step dancing, and singing by the local children was truly amazing. When that young girl sang ‘Emigrant Eyes’ a cappella, it reminded me of grandmother’s journey to New York, alone at only 19 years old, “  she said.  “Thank you for a really fun night with neighbors and friends.”

Orangeburg resident Deirdre O’Boy, from the Department of English at Lehman College, and director of the CUNY Institute of Irish Studies spoke about how food had been portrayed in Irish literature over the ages.

As part of the decorations that filled the Lawrence room, The Danu Gallery of Pearl River generously displayed beautiful Celtic giftware.

The Night in Ireland event follows a Night in Argentina and a Night in Sicily.

Symposium Educates Parents and Health Care Professionals About Concussions

concussion2

Parents, health care professionals, and nursing students listened to top experts on concussions during Dominican College’s Healthcare Symposium entitled “Concussions: What You Need to Know” on Monday, November 16 in the Prusmack Center.

The evening symposium was moderated by Dr. N. Noel Testa, Former Clinical Professor of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, NYU Langone Medical Center, and a Consultant with the Department of Education NYC, Public School Athletic League.  Dr. Testa urged those in attendance to become educated and find out what kind of concussion programs their school has.    “I am asking all of you, as parents, guardians and educators to get yourself involved,”  he said. ” You’ve got to go into the schools.  You’ve got to ask what is going on.”

The experts stressed that a concussion may not cause you to lose consciousness, and it may not be detected by an MRI. Coaching staff should be aware that the signs of a concussion include an athlete who appears dazed or stunned, is confused about an assignment or moves clumsily.  Athletes should be aware of symptoms including a headache, nausea, balance problems, double vision, and confusion.

One of the panelists, Dr. John Galluci, who is the Medical Coordinator of Major League Soccer and the President of JAG Physical Therapy, said that awareness of concussions has increased greatly,  “What this has really done – and I call it the concussion revolution – is put healthcare first now in sports.”  Dr. Gallucci said the team approach is critical and nurses, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists and doctors need to advocate every day.

This is the third annual Healthcare Symposium presented by Dominican College.
