Debaters Succeed at Intercollegiate Tournament

debatingUnder threatening skies from the latest impending snowstorm, the College’s Debating Team returned to action on February 8, making their first road trip of the year to New York City to compete at an intercollegiate debate tournament sponsored by Yeshiva University.

Newcomer Jordan Zuber-Banks paired up with Natalie Arias to lead the team to a fourth-place finish in a very competitive Varsity Division. Mr. Zuber-Banks also earned an individual fourth-place speaking award. In the Junior Varsity Division, the newly formed team of Katherine Flores and Alma Godinez debated well amid a very competitive field, securing a very nice victory in the tournament’s second round. Because her teammate could not attend the tournament due to illness, newcomer Shakira Hamilton was unable to compete at this tournament but certainly provided spirited support to her teammates, cheering them on throughout the day.

The Debate Team will be back in action at the College on Sunday, February 22 at 11:30 a.m. in the Palisades Room in Casey Hall.
