Dominican College to Launch New Rowing Club

In fall 2021, Dominican College will launch a new Rowing Club, with men’sand women’s teams.  The club will compete against collegiate teams in the New York area, regional races including the New York State Collegiate Championships, and some national races – including the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.

Coach Ivan Rudolph-Shabinsky is looking for interested incoming students and current students to join the Rowing Club and stresses that no experience is necessary.  He said there are many national team rowers who didn’t start rowing until college.  “This creates a wonderful opportunity for the late-blooming athlete who has not yet found ‘their sport’ to try rowing and know that, even if they start only in college, they have the possibility of reaching the highest levels of the sport,” he said.

Rudolph-Shabinsky, Director of the Business Division at Dominican College, is an accomplished rower and coach who began his career at Cornell University.  He continued racing as an adult – most recently winning a gold medal in a masters four in 2019 at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta.  He is also president of the Rockland Rowing Association, where he coaches youth rowers and competes as a masters rower.

Dominican College has partnered with Rockland Rowing to develop the Rowing Club.  Rockland Rowing is completing a new rowing center at Rockland Lake this spring that will include the new Crestron Rowing Pavilion, a low-profile eco-dock, and a buoyed 10-lane course.

Those interested in joining the Rowing Club, should click here for more information or contact Coach Rudolph-Shabinsky at i.rudolph-shabinsky@duny.edu.

Softball Coach Authors Suzi Softball Book for Young People

Head Softball Coach Joseph Burbridge has written a book called Suzi Softball to encourage young people to be more accepting of others.

Dominican College Head Softball Coach Joseph Burbridge has written a book, Suzi Softball, that he hopes will encourage young people to be more accepting of others.  The book follows the adventure of a young softball determined to make everyone feel included.  Suzi ultimately persuades neighbors – like Franny Football, Bobby Basketball, Vicky Volleyball and others – that they can be friends with people who are different.

“I really think it’s a simple way of saying, ‘Don’t leave anyone out and everyone just get along,’” said Burbridge.

Burbridge has more than 20 years of experience in the field of education.  Prior to coaching at Dominican College, he taught and coached students in elementary school and high school.  Burbridge will be donating $1 from the sale of each Suzi Softball book to the dirt 2 turf campaign, which will fund the construction of a new turf field on campus. Clinton Named Coach of the Year by Met Basketball Writers Association

Joseph S. Clinton has been named the All-Met Division II Men’s College Basketball Coach of the Year for the third time.

Dominican College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Joseph S. Clinton has been named the All-Met Division II Men’s College Basketball Coach of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association.

During the 2019-2020 season, the Chargers captured the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division regular season title.  Clinton then guided his team to a second straight conference playoff championship and a second consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament.  The NCAA cancelled the regional tournament in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Clinton said he considers the Coach of the Year award “a team award” and he credits his coaching staff with doing a great job.   “The assistant coaches and players were awesome.  They put in a lot of hard work and it paid off for us.  We were disappointed they had to cancel the regional because this was a team that had the potential to get to the Elite Eight,” he said.  “I am really going to miss this senior class.  They won a lot of games in their careers and won two championships.”

This is the third time that Clinton has been named All-Met Division II Coach of the Year.  Clinton, who also serves as Director of Athletics, has 29 seasons and 857 games as the head men’s basketball coach.

Former New Jersey Net Michael O’Koren Inspires Charger Athletes

At the annual Tip-Off Dinner (pictured left to right), women’s basketball coach Bill Diener, Trustee Michael McLaughlin, former NBA player Michael O’Koren, and men’s basketball coach Joe Clinton.

The 2019-2020 women’s and men’s basketball team got advice on how to be successful on and off the court from former New Jersey Net standout Mike O’Koren at the annual Tip-Off Dinner on October 24, 2019.

O’Koren said that during his career he learned that fundamentals, confidence, and camaraderie are all key to performing well on the basketball court.  At the University of North Carolina, Koren was an All-American athlete and played under legendary head coach Dean Smith.  He was a first round selection of the New Jersey Nets in 1980 and played with the club for ten years.  O’Koren then moved on to coaching as an assistant coach with the Nets, the Washington Wizards, and Rutgers University.

College trustee and former Charger basketball player Michael McLaughlin, ’90, told the athletes in attendance, “As great of a player as he is, off the court he is an even better person.”

O’Koren’s advice to the athletes went beyond tips for a successful athletic career.  He told them to be successful in life they needed discipline and should strive to make their parents proud. “You know the difference between right and wrong,” he said. “Follow that right path and make them proud and good things will certainly happen for you.”

The Tip-Off Dinner was held at the Casa Mia House in Blauvelt, NY.

Mens Basketball Team Wins CACC Championship

The mens basketball team celebrated winning the CACC Championship after the victory at Caldwell University.

The Dominican College mens basketball team won the 2018-2019 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Championship on March 10, 2019 after downing the top seed, Bloomfield College, 70-55, in a game played on Corino Court on the campus of Caldwell University.

With the win, Dominican (23-7) earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA East Regional Tournament. Making their third consecutive CACC Championship Final appearance, DC brings home the crown for the first time since joining the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II back in 2000.

Junior guard Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.) was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) and to the All-Tournament Team.  Teammates Jonathan Garcia (Springfield, Mass.) and Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn.) also joined Rodwell on the All-Tournament Team.

The Chargers opened the game with the first five points, but the Bears rallied to take an 11-9 edge with just under 11 minutes left in the first half.  Gardener tied the game with two free throws and began a 17-1 tear that saw DC jump in front 26-12.  BC would cut the lead to 26-21 in the final two and half minutes, but Rodwell recorded back-to-back trey’s and Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y.) closed out the half with a layup to give the Chargers the 34-21 lead at the intermission.

Dominican would lead by as many as 20 points in the second half as Ginyard connected on a three-point bucket (68-48) with 3:31 left in regulation en route to the 70-55 win.

Former Women’s Basketball Coach Steve Baxter Enters CACC Hall of Fame

Former Women’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Baxter was posthumously inducted into the CACC Hall of Fame. He is shown here in Orlando, FL, during a trip with his team.

Dominican College’s former Women’s Basketball Head Coach Steve Baxter was posthumously inducted into the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Hall of Fame.  The induction ceremony took place before the start of the women’s basketball game on Saturday, February 16, 2019 on the Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center. Baxter passed away in 2006.

“We are extremely proud that the Hall of Fame Committee selected Steve Baxter into this year’s class of inductees,” said Director of Athletics Joseph S. Clinton.  “Steve was one of my best friends for more than 30 years.  We called him ‘the legend’ because he had been a member of our DC family for so long.  He was a guy you could lean on at all times and he truly cared about the student-athletes.”

Baxter served for 29 years at Dominican College in a variety of roles, including 24 years as the women’s basketball head coach. A three-time CACC Coach of the Year, Baxter led the Chargers to 16 CACC Tournament appearances and two trips to the NAIA Division II National Tournament. He compiled a career record of 361-328, and was among the top 15 in career wins among NAIA coaches when he retired in 2001.

Coach Baxter Court serves as the home venue for the men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball teams.  The court was dedicated in the legendary coach’s memory on October 14, 2006.

Basketball Season Kicks Off With Tip-Off Dinner

Tip-Off Dinner guest speaker Frank McLaughlin of Fordham University with his nephew Michael McLaughlin ’90, a former Charger basketball player and current Dominican College Trustee.

As the 2018-2019 basketball season was about to get underway, Charger athletes  were told that their character was their most important possession.  They were encouraged to have discipline and stay focused. The words of wisdom came from special guest speaker Frank McLaughlin at the Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tip-Off Dinner on October 25, 2018.

Mc Laughlin is a member of the ECAC Hall of Fame and New England Basketball Hall of Fame.  He was a standout basketball athlete at Fordham University and was drafted by the New York Knicks.  His coaching career included serving as assistant coach at the University of Notre Dame and head coach at Harvard University.  McLaughlin then returned to Fordham to take over as athletic director.  In 2012, he was promoted to associate vice president of student affairs for athletic alumni relations at Fordham – a position he still holds.

“Winning is extremely important.  You are getting ready to start the season. You’ve got to understand that winning is important.  I get that because I’m from Fordham and Vince Lombardi was a Fordham man and there was nothing more important than winning – except winning the right way,” said McLaughlin. “I think you’ve got to remember that as the season starts.  Lombardi always preached to his team that it was God, country, family, and then team.”

Trustee and former Charger basketball player Michael McLaughlin ’90 explained that the idea behind the Tip-Off Dinner is to energize the players and have speakers that give insight into what made them successful.  He described his uncle Frank McLaughlin as an incredible human being.  “Were’ trying to give you guys role models, not just on the court, but off the court,” he said.

The Tip-Off Dinner was held at the Casa Mia House in Blauvelt, NY.

Chargers Win CACC Golf Championship

In September, the Chargers won their third CACC Golf Championship in program history.

The Dominican College men’s golf team won the 2018 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Golf Championship held September 29-30, 2018 at the Deerfield Golf Course in Newark, DE. The Chargers compiled team scores of 298 both days to finish the tournament with a final score of 596 (+36) to win their third CACC Tournament in program history, after winning back-to-back championships in 2001 and 2002.

For alumnus Keith Prokop ’14, who coaches the team, winning the championship was a dream come true. “It meant everything. My goal for our college program here was to complete three things: win a CACC, win a Regional Championship, and attend a National Championship. This was the last thing on the list that this team needed to accomplish,” he said.

Coach Prokop attributes the victory to the players’ hard work and dedication, as well as to the great competition among his players. For the spring season, Coach Prokop hopes the players will improve both mentally and physically so that they have a chance to win the NCAA East/Atlantic Super Regionals and another chance to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championship.

New Inductees Welcomed into Athletic Hall of Fame

Five individuals and one team were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Friday, September 28, 2018 in the Granito Center.

A record-breaking team, four standout athletes, and one longtime coach were inducted into the Dominican College Athletic Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Friday, September 28, 2018 in the Granito Center. The new inductees include: the 2005 Men’s Soccer Team;  Brian Mackey ’08, Golf; Courtney Marks ’00, Volleyball; Corey Fleetwood ’96, Basketball; Rick Gianetti, Service; and Bobby Mulligan, Basketball.

2005 Men’s Soccer Team

The 2005 men’s soccer team holds the school record with 17 straight wins and won the first NCAA Tournament berth in school history.  The team was ranked in the top ten in the nation and first in the region by the New England Region by NSCAA. The team also retained its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season and tournament titles.

Former Assistant Soccer Coach Lou Fratello fondly remembered the players’ camaraderie. “They were brothers on and off the field. They were all together, all the time, and in the true sense of the word.  They were eating, sleeping, playing, working, pushing each other to be better,” he said.

In 2005 men’s soccer team played 20 games and gave up just 11 goals all season.

Brian Mackey ’08, Golf

Brian Mackey was the first athlete in school history to qualify for an NCAA National Championship and the first to win an NCAA Northeast Regional Individual Championship.  His list of honors includes: three-time Division II PING All-Region Northeast Team selection; four-time All-CACC honoree; 2008 Charger Award recipient; and four-time Dominican College Men’s Golf MVP recipient.

Athletic Director Joseph Clinton said even with all those awards, Mackey remains one of the most humble guys he knows. “With all the things he’s done, he doesn’t have a big head.  He’s a winner.  He’s a gentleman in every sense of the word,” said Clinton. “I can’t say enough good things about him.”

Mackey apologized for getting choked up when he spoke.  “There’s one honor that I have really cherished to this point and that was the fact that I got to play for my dad who is here,” he said. Wayne Mackey was the former men’s golf coach. Brian Mackey continues to play professional golf and won three tournaments in 2018.

Courtney Marks ’00, Volleyball

Courtney Marks was “phenomenal on the court” according to John Burke, V.P. for Student Development and Dean of Students, who coached the team when she played.  She had 3,115 assists – second in all-time program history.

Burke credits Marks with assisting him in coaching the team. In addition, he said Marks was a good student and helped to start several service projects, including the Big Brother, Big Sister Program, which continues on today. “She is small in stature, but has a huge heart and she really allowed our program to sustain a couple of good years,” he said.

Marks was a two-time recipient of the DC Women’s Volleyball Most Valuable Player Award.

Corey Fleetwood ’96 Basketball

Clinton, who also serves as head basketball coach,  thanked former player Corey Fleetwood for giving his heart and soul to him and said he will never forget it.  “He took the team and we got as high as 15th in the country and he kind of carried us on his back,” said Clinton.

Fleetwood thanked his father for instilling in him the love of the game, while always being kind and gentle.  Then he thanked Coach Clinton.  “He was my second father.  He was kind, but he was tough. He wouldn’t settle for anything except my best and that’s what I wanted to give him because he believed in me,” he said.

Fleetwood was a two year team captain, honorable All-American, three year All-CACC selection, 8th all-time in program history in rebounds, and a member of the 1000 Point Club.

Rick Giannetti, Service

Longtime Baseball Coach Rick Gianetti asked all his former players to stand at the induction ceremony and thanked them.  “I’m standing here because of you guys,” he said.  Now in his 27th year at Dominican College, Giannetti said, “I’ve spent more than half of my life here.  I owe everything in my adult life to this place – everything.”

Clinton said he was very proud of Gianetti’s accomplishments. “This is my observation with Rick.  He is a baseball guy.  Baseball has been his life.  The passion and love he has for the game is a marvel to watch every day,” he said. “He has the same passion and love of this game that he had when we first started.”

Gianetti has 784 Dominican College coaching victories; his teams have won 15 CACC Tournament Championships and made 10 regional tournament appearances.  His other accomplishments include being named ECAC Coach of the Year, nine-time CACC Coach of the Year, and six-time Regional Coach of the Year.

Bobby Mulligan, Basketball

Bobby Mulligan, a star basketball player who tragically died more than 30 years ago at the start of his senior year, was posthumously inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Mulligan had amassed 912 career points at Dominican College, and certainly would have reached the 1,000 point mark if he had played his senior year.

A letter from Mulligan’s sister, Mary Sue, who lives in California, was read during the ceremony.  “We are truly grateful for your recognition of Bobby.  Since his death, we have come to know the values Dominican College and the athletic division hold true and we are honored that you believe Bobby held these values as well,” she wrote.

Mulligan was a beloved student, remembered for his generosity and his volunteerism.  His good friend and teammate Billy Hofmann ’89 said the choice of Mulligan to enter the Athletic Hall of Fame was a “great choice and well-deserved.”
