Annual Honors Convocation and Alpha Chi Induction Held
David Daniel, the President of the Dominican College Chapter of Alpha Chi, delivered the Honors Convocation Address.
Dominican College’s most accomplished students were recognized during the annual Honors Convocation and Alpha Chi Induction on Monday, November 14, 2016, in the Hennessy Center.
The Alpha Chi Honor Society is a national honor society which recognizes academic excellence, leadership, and service. Alpha Chi is open to juniors and seniors in all disciplines and is highly selective. During the ceremony, the inductees lit candles from a Candle of Knowledge and were presented with a white stole around their necks.
David Daniel, a senior nursing student and the President of the Dominican College Chapter of Alpha Chi gave an inspiring Honors Convocation Address. The theme throughout his speech was that there is greatness inside each and every student. He told a story of a young boy who was able to save his friend from drowning in an icy pond. When responders questioned how the small boy could possibly break a large branch to help save his friend, an older man replied, “There was no one to tell him that he can’t.”
Daniel then spoke to the students. “If you can move away from naysayers, If you can push away the idea that it’s not possible, you will be sitting here and the next thing you know, when you move to the next phase of your life, you’ll be amazed at what you can do, because there is greatness inside of you,” he said.
In addition to the Alpha Chi induction, students were honored for being on the Dean’s List for one to three years.

Liberal Arts Students Present Their Senior Research Projects
Students, faculty, and administrators stopped by Lawrence Hall on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, to speak to seniors in the Liberal Arts program about their research projects.
More than 40 Liberal Arts students presented their Senior Research Projects on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, in the Lawrence Room of Rosary Hall. The projects covered a wide variety of disciplines — including biology, communication studies, psychology and the social sciences.
The presentations come as seniors are wrapping up their capstone and senior seminar courses. “Seniors who have been working on a particular research topic and subject have an opportunity to explain their research and their findings to the rest of the Dominican College community,” said Dr. Mark Meachem, Director of the Division of Arts and Sciences.
This is the second year that all Liberal Arts students have presented their projects on the same day. It’s a way to highlight Dominican College’s emphasis on the value of a Liberal Arts education, which provides students with a strong foundation in skills related to speaking, reading, writing, problem solving, analyzing, and interpreting information.

Scholarship Program Supports Biology Students

Six freshmen at Dominican College have been awarded up to $10,000 a year for four years as part of the new BLISS (Biology for Low Income Student Scholars) program. This scholarship program was made possible by a $592,688 grant Dominican College was awarded from the National Science Foundation (NSF) .
In addition to financial aid, the program assists these academically-talented biology students by providing internships, research experiences, and field trips. The scholarship winners work closely with each other, faculty, and administrators to ensure their success in a biology career.
Bernadette Connors, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biology, said, “This program will help to draw those students who may have financial need, but who are very passionate about learning biology and about gaining an education in all the sciences with a liberal arts background.”
The students accepted this year in the scholarship program are: Stephanie Denis, Darian Fernandez, Albert Martinez, Kelly Murphy, Natalia Perez-Cervantes, and Amanda Saab. Next year, eight scholarships will be awarded.

Winners of the 2015 Spirit of the Founders Award Announced
The Dominican College 2015 Spirit of the Founders Award was presented to seniors Erica Descartes and Brett Mitchell during a luncheon at Granito Center on Thursday, September 24, 2015. The event was one of the highlights of the week-long celebration of Founders Week, the annual Dominican College tradition of celebrating our Dominican heritage.
The Spirit of the Founders Award represents a respect for the values and traditions that have endured for centuries and holds the promise that the Dominican tradition will be carried on. It is presented to students who have great potential as leaders as they leave Dominican College and make their mark in the world.
The winners of the award were selected by a vote of Dominican College administrators, faculty, staff and students. Other nominees for the award included seniors Kiara Rivera and Roberto Roman and juniors Adriannie Ascencio and Joseph Key.
